Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis visits Newlands Clinic
As part of his state visit to Africa, on 9 January 2019 Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis visited Newlands Clinic. Ruedi Lüthy showed him personally around the HIV clinic and the attached training centre. Federal Councillor Cassis emphasised the importance of Newlands Clinic to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Most recently, it held the first international pilot course for nurses from the SADC region.

Quality of care decisive in battling the HIV/Aids epidemic
With the study TENART, HIV specialist Ruedi Lüthy and his team examined the outcomes of more than 600 HIV/Aids patients receiving treatment at Newlands Clinic in Harare, Zimbabwe. Thanks to the comprehensive care, the results are comparable to those in Switzerland.
Stefan Zimmerli new Medical Coordinator
As part of a cooperation with Inselspital, Prof. Stefan Zimmerli, Attending Physician at the University Clinic for Infectious Diseases at Inselspital, is to take over as Medical Coordinator of Newlands Clinic. Ruedi Lüthy will be reducing his workload from January 2017 and will ultimately step down as Medical Director.

A new name for the foundation
On 1 July 2016, Swiss Aids Care International will be renamed as the Ruedi Lüthy Foundation. This change represents a promise to actively uphold our founder's vision and ideals over the long term.

Food crisis threatens patients at Prof. Ruedi Lüthy's HIV clinic
Amid severe drought conditions, Zimbabwe and large parts of Southern Africa face an impending food crisis. An emergency food relief programme aims to provide basic sustenance to a total of 600 families for one year.

New Women’s Health Centre
Thanks to a significant bequest, Newlands Clinic has been able to expand yet further, setting up a Women’s Health Centre next to the HIV clinic. In addition to diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer and sexually transmitted infections, the centre will offer family planning services and advice to victims of sexual abuse and gender based violence.

Matthias Widmaier appointed to Country Director
Following on from Sabine Lüthy taking over as CEO in 2012, Swiss Aids Care International has taken the next step in its succession planning. Matthias Widmaier is taking on the role of Country Director of Swiss Aids Care International (Zimbabwe), thus expanding the management team of Newlands Clinic. Prof. Ruedi Lüthy will remain on-site as Medical Director.
10 Years Newlands Clinic
In February, Newlands Clinic in Harare celebrated its 10th anniversary. The plans for the coming years are to increase the number of patients from the current level of around 4,500 to 6,000.
Newlands Clinic serving as model clinic in Zimbabwe
The globally active non-profit organisation Population Services International (PSI) is to open four clinics based on the Newlands Clinic model. Newlands Clinic will train the staff, and will support PSI with the overall concept, implementation, mentorship and quality assurance.
