OUR HIV CLNIC

THE HIV CLINIC IN HARARE

The Ruedi Lüthy Foundation has been active in Zimbabwe since 2003. The Newlands Clinic in Harare, founded by Ruedi Lüthy, provides care for over 8,000 HIV patients and trains around 1,000 professionals annually in the management of HIV and AIDS.

HIV IN ZIMBABWE - THE SITUATION

According to current estimates, around 1.3 million people in Zimbabwe are living with HIV. Women and young girls are particularly affected: in many regions, the infection rate among women is significantly higher than among men – which can be attributed to structural inequalities, a lack of prevention options, poverty and a lack of access to healthcare.

The Newlands Clinic in Harare is a concrete sign of hope. It is run by the Ruedi Lüthy Foundation and is based on three complementary pillars:

  • Comprehensive medical care and treatment for people with HIV, especially those from the poorest backgrounds.

  • Training and further education for specialist staff – to ensure that there are enough qualified doctors and nurses throughout Zimbabwe to combat HIV in the long term.

  • Research and knowledge transfer to continuously develop treatment and prevention and to combat the epidemic in a targeted manner.

WEEP and MEEP – ways out of dependency

Through its WEEP (Women's Economic Empowerment Project) and MEEP (Men's Economic Empowerment Project) programs, the foundation supports patients in generating their own income – and thus leading self-determined lives. They receive training in business management, start-up capital, and individual support. This enables them to establish small businesses – for example, in poultry farming or the sale of handcrafted products.
