Shutdown protest in Zimbabwe

Since the end of June, Zimbabweans have been staging protests against the economic slump and increasing poverty. An initial shutdown took place on 6 July, and this was followed by a second on 13 and 14 July. During this time, services at Newlands Clinic were reduced. Today, 15 July, Newlands Clinic’s services are back to normal.

Newlands Clinic is situated in a neighbourhood in the north-east of the capital, Harare, where the situation has thus far been completely calm. However, it was left up to the staff at the clinic whether they wanted to come to work or not, and services were reduced. The dispensation of medication and medical treatment were ensured at all times; routine appointments will be rearranged as soon as possible. Today, 15 July, Newlands Clinic’s services are back to normal.

More protests expected

Life in Harare is back to normal, too, but we expect more protests in the days and weeks to come. We will keep constant track of the developments on the ground, and we will decide on a case-by-case basis whether the normal running of the clinic can be maintained.
